New York Blood Center (NYBC) was proud to recognize Amanda Woods as the recipient of the 2026 Heather McNamara Leadership and Blood Donation Advocacy Scholarship during this year’s Long Island Chairperson’s Dinner.
Amanda’s commitment to blood donation advocacy began with her Girl Scouts Gold Award project, developed in partnership with NYBC. Through the initiative, she organized a statewide blood drive effort across New York, collaborating with schools, community organizations, and local leaders to recruit 73 blood donors, enough to help save up to 219 lives. In addition to coordinating the drive, Amanda created educational workshops and a guidebook to encourage other Girl Scout troops to organize blood drives in their own communities.
The scholarship honors the legacy of Heather McNamara, a longtime friend of NYBC, Islip EMT, and passionate advocate for blood donation. As a blood recipient who relied on transfusions throughout her courageous battle with cancer, Heather frequently participated in NYBC events and shared her story with local media to raise awareness about the lifesaving importance of blood donation. The scholarship recognizes individuals who demonstrate the same leadership, compassion, and dedication to helping save lives.
Amanda, pictured with Heather’s mother at the event, is also a New York State Department of Health certified EMT-Basic, giving her firsthand insight into the critical role blood donations play in emergency care. Now a student at Clemson University, she continues her advocacy work as a Campus Ambassador promoting both blood donation and stem cell donor registration.
NYBC is honored to celebrate Amanda’s leadership, dedication, and ongoing commitment to advancing lifesaving causes. Congratulations, Amanda, and thank you for helping carry Heather’s legacy forward.
