Blood donations nationwide typically drop by more than one-third during the winter months

YONKERS, NY – New York Blood Center (NYBC) partnered with New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer to host a blood drive on Monday, December 29 in Yonkers, NY. The timing of this blood drive was particularly critical as blood donations plummet during the holidays and winter season.

NYBC is especially grateful to these exceptional leaders for rolling up their sleeves to donate alongside members of the Westchester community.

NYBC extends a heartfelt thank-you to Tracy Rhett, Assistant Vice President of Youth and Employment Services, and to the entire team at Westhab, Inc. for hosting the drive and helping make this lifesaving day possible. Their leadership and partnership played a vital role in ensuring a successful day of donation.

Together, the generosity of our donors, hosts, and community leaders is making a meaningful difference for patients across New York who rely on lifesaving blood every day.

NYBC currently has just a three- to four-day supply of blood overall, leaving little margin for emergencies, severe weather, or sudden spikes in hospital demand. Supplies of O-negative, O-positive, and B-negative blood are critically low, with only a one- to two-day supply on hand, and donors are urgently needed.
