New York Blood Center was spotlighted in an extensive segment on YES Network’s The Bronx Beat Program. YES Network is the official broadcast and video streaming network of the New York Yankees. The Bronx Beat program is YES Network’s Emmy Award-winning series spotlighting Bronx businesses and community leadership.
This highlight comes just months after NYBC opened its first dedicated donor center in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx. The new center is NYBC’s 21st donor center in the tri-state area, establishing a permanent NYBC presence in all five boroughs of New York City. The Bronx Donor Center is a critical community presence as blood donations in the Bronx have declined by nearly 40 percent in recent years, while demand at Bronx-based hospitals continues to outpace donations.
Designed to make blood donations more convenient for Bronx residents and to help reach new, diverse, and younger donors, NYBC’s Bronx Donor Center is strengthening the long-term stability of the local blood supply.
The ten-minute YES Network feature includes interviews with several NYBC team leaders, partners, and donors, including leadership of the newly opened NYBC Bronx Donor Center, longstanding Bronx blood drive partners at NY Health & Hospital’s Bronx Jacobi Medical Center, NYBC Components Lab team leaders, and Bronx-based High School Blood Drive Champions.
For nearly 30 years, the New York Yankees Corporate & Community Relations Department has partnered with NYBC to create the High School Blood Drive Championship, supporting and recognizing high-performing tri-state area high schools that serve as inspiring examples in encouraging young adults and high school students to donate blood. This work is especially critical as the number of teenage and young adult donors has decreased by more than 20 percent in the last several years.
New York Blood Center (NYBC) and the New York Yankees came together on Tuesday, June 30 at historic Yankee Stadium to celebrate the extraordinary group of high schools whose leadership and commitment to blood donations helped save thousands of lives across our region. Thanks to the generosity of the New York Yankees, schools were invited to attend the game and be honored for the impact of their collective efforts in a special on-field pre-game ceremony.
Representatives from each winning school were joined by Jeannie Mascolino, Vice President of Operations for NYBC, as they were recognized at home plate at the special celebration. Bronx-based high schools Atmosphere Academy Public Charter School and Fordham Preparatory School were among the more than a dozen high schools honored.
All participating high schools demonstrated outstanding dedication to hosting and promoting local blood drives. Through their efforts, students not only supported their communities but also contributed to nearly 35,000 blood donations this school year—an incredible achievement with lifesaving impact for patients in need. Beyond the competition, the event underscored the importance of engaging young people in sustaining the blood supply and supporting future generations of patients.
