The October cover of the Journal Transfusion depicts the emerging role of genome sequencing in Transfusion Medicine. The illustration represents the individual genes that encode blood group antigens and their chromosomal location, and the depth of sequence coverage (Circos plot).

The artwork was inspired by an article contributed from the NYBC Blood Group Genomics Laboratory in collaboration with researchers in the Division of Genetics and Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard, using samples from the MilSeq Project: Enabling personalized medicine through exome sequencing in the U.S. Air Force Clinical Trial.

The report details the performance of bloodTyper, an interpretation algorithm developed by William Lane at Brigham Women’s and Connie Westhoff and Sunitha Vege from New York Blood Center Genomics Laboratory.
