Deputy Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Eric A. Gehrie is Deputy Chief Medical Officer of New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe). He serves as Medical Director for NYBC’s collection, manufacturing, and laboratory testing operations in Rye; Medical Director for NYBCe’s Comprehensive Cell Solutions business unit; and Program Director of NYBC’s ACGME-accredited Transfusion Medicine Fellowship.
Prior to joining NYBCe, Dr. Gehrie held positions at Yale School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and the American Red Cross. A passionate educator, he previously served as Associate Program Director for Clinical Pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he received the Department of Pathology’s Clinical Pathology Teaching Award in 2020.
Dr. Gehrie has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. He is an editor of the sixth edition of Rossi’s Principles of Transfusion Medicine and has been selected as lead editor of the forthcoming seventh edition, expected in 2028. He also serves on the editorial board of the journal Transfusion. His honors include a “40 Under 40” recognition in 2017 and a “Choosing Wisely Champion Award” in 2020, both from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Dr. Gehrie’s clinical and research interests include understanding donor factors that could precipitate transfusion reactions in recipients, the impact of red blood cell alloimmunization on patient outcomes, and clinical transfusion best practices. He is also interested in expanding patient access to blood transfusion, transplantation, and therapeutic apheresis.
Dr. Gehrie earned his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed his transfusion medicine training at Yale University.
